How to Configure Products in D365 Finance and Supply Chain Management
Today’s manufacturers need the ability to make on-the-fly, version-controlled modifications to products as their business grows. To adapt with changing customer preferences and stay competitive, manufacturers use Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management to configure products. The solution streamlines a number of aspects of the sales order process, and to demonstrate exactly how, we’ve created a two-part video series.
The videos walk you through exactly how to configure products in the software that can be used in sales quotation, sales orders, purchase orders, production orders, project item requirements, and even intercompany orders.
First, What Is a Product Configurator?
The purpose of a product configurator is to provide users with functionality that will enable them to create a generic, reusable model structure which can have multiple user-defined variations. This functionality will not only reduce the number of items in the product master tables, it will allow the user to configure a customer-specific finished item by dynamically building the associated bill of materials (BOM) and route. You can also create the appropriate sales price for your configure-to-order product.
How to Set Up Business Rules and Constraints
In part 1 of the two-video series, Senior Solution Architect at Western Computer Ian Hartman walks us through the end-user experience in the software by taking a simple sales order. Using an out-of-the-box speaker product that comes in different finishes and sizes, he shows you how to open the software, select a customer and product, and begin configuring.
The software allows you to easily—even while the customer is on the phone—perform things like calculating the price, calculating delivery dates, loading existing templates, and more.
How to Set Up Configuration Models
As with all product configuration in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management, everything resides in the Product Information Management module. In part 2 in our series, we show you the particulars involved in configuring products with details such as unique descriptions. You’ll also see how the system alerts users if they have made the same configurations before—ensuring that duplicate configurations are not made in the system repository.
